Want to pick your brain. For a rt handed thrower, should the action of the right leg during the cross step go no farther than
the left knee to help keep
the thrower back over the left and setup the left plant leg in
front. Or
another way to say it, the left leg has to be quick to recover
leading the
throw?
I have always taught and trained to recover the left while in the
penultimate phase. Meaning the left leg should be in front and ready to plant when the
right foot touches down so you can immediatelty turn the right foot/knee down
into the left block. This allows for the maximum transition of speed from the
run. More importantly the thrower must stay back and closed with the upper body
with the throwing arm long behind the right hip to maximize the pull on the
javelin at the moment the plant foot hits. Holding that block and reacting with
the long pull will increase the power and force applied to the javelin. Hope
that helps!
